Motorists in NSW are being warned about a misunderstood road rule that could see people whacked with a $410 fine.
As part of Road Rule Awareness Week, NSW Police claimed a lack of drivers were adhering to the rules surrounding keep left unless overtaking signage.
While it is clear it is an offence to drive in the right lane unless overtaking, police added it was also illegal to drive in the right lane of a multi-lane road if the speed limit is greater than 80km/h, unless a driver is overtaking.

This act can cost you $410, and drivers can cop two demerit points.
Transport for NSW posted a video addressing the misunderstood road rule, saying motorists on multi-lane roads could only drive in the right lane when overtaking, turning, avoiding an obstacle, or driving in congested traffic.
“If a keep left unless overtaking sign is displayed, the requirement applies regardless of the speed limit,” Transport for NSW says.
Drivers flocked to social media to thank police for calling out those who break the road rule.
“This is most frustrating and dangerous when a driver refuses to leave the right-hand lane and drives 10 or so below the speed limit,” one commented.
“There is far too much of this happening on the roads and it’s very frustrating. It’s common sense or courtesy – if you’re (not) overtaking go back in the left lane. So simple,” another said.
“This rule is the biggest one of all that’s broken. People do not misunderstand it, they blatantly ignore it,” a third added.
