Normani has opened up about why her BET Awards performance was nixed at the last minute.
Just before Sunday’s ceremony in Los Angeles, the singer, 28, announced on social media that a “really bad accident” during rehearsals had left her injured and unable to hit the stage.
“I am more frustrated and disappointed than anyone believe me,” Normani wrote in her Instagram Stories. “While in rehearsals for BET I had a really bad accident and injured myself.”
The “Worth It” crooner admitted that she’s “normally good for powering through under any circumstance,” but due to her doctor’s orders, she was “just not able to make this performance happen.”
Normani also shared a photo of herself on crutches with a bandage around her right knee and what appeared to be a boot on her right foot.
“I desperately wanted to give you my best on that stage but performing would delay my healing,” she continued. “I have been going through my process and doing my best to make sense of my feelings regarding this. I am devastated and hate feeling like a disappointment to you but I have to focus on recovering at this time.”
The former Fifth Harmony member then wrapped up her message by showing gratitude to BET “for giving me and all of the other beautiful Black women this opportunity.”
“This is definitely NOT how I envisioned this weekend but best believe I will be championing everyone from home tonight. I’m sorrrrrrrry guys and love you so much,” she added.
The 2024 BET Awards would have marked Normani’s first big live performance on the heels of her debut album, “Dopamine,” which dropped earlier this month.
Though Normani was unable to perform at the 2024 BET Awards, viewers got a chance to watch Megan Thee Stallion, Will Smith, Sexyy Red, Lauryn Hill, Latto, Ice Spice, GloRilla, Victoria Monet and more take the stage.
