An engagement party to celebrate the upcoming nuptials of an Australian police officer and his fiancee ended in tragedy after a freak accident.

Liam Trimmer, a 29-year-old senior constable in Western Australia, died over the weekend after he fell and sliced his neck. His family and friends tried unsuccessfully to save his life.

“Everything was done to try and save him but it wasn’t to be and I know everyone that was involved are really, really hurting,” Western Australia Police Commissioner Col Blanch told 9 News Perth. “I think they wish they could just wake up from this nightmare.”
No other details were made public about the injury that caused his death.
Trimmer, from the United Kingdom, moved to Australia and graduated from Joondalup Police Academy in 2013, according to local media.
Four years later, he moved to Kalgoorlie and joined the local force’s gang crime squad and tactical response group.

“This extraordinary officer loved helping the community, was a fine example of WA policing and it’s such a tragedy,” Blanch said.
“A very, very confident, capable young man with his whole life ahead of him, and that’s how sad this is.”

Western Australia Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti said Trimmer’s death was an “awful, awful tragedy,” reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
The Western Australian Police Union mourned his death in a social media message Sunday evening.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of a valued member of the blue family,” the union wrote on Facebook.
“A dedicated police officer sadly passed away in an off-duty accident over the weekend. The WA Police Union sends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen officer during this difficult period.”
Trimmer’s family and fellow officers will be provided support while the coroner prepares a report into his death.
