(NewsNation) — Most Americans believe the federal government should be responsible for ensuring every citizen receives health care, per a survey conducted by Pew Research Center.
Of the 8,709 U.S. citizens who partook in the survey, 65% of Americans believe the burden should lie on the government.
An emphatic majority of Democrats (88%) believe it is the federal government’s duty, while less than half (40%) of Republicans surveyed concurred.
GOP voters in low-income families were more in favor of the government’s involvement (56%). As for middle- and higher-income families, respectively, 36% and 29% concurred.
As for the ways in which the government should intervene, 36% said a single national program. Meanwhile, 28% believe in a combination of government and private programs.
Democrats were vastly more likely — 56% to 18% — to prefer a government-created “single-payer” health insurance program.
