Morgan found a bottle of kombucha in the back of her fridge. Moments later, she was in A&E

Crouched down, Morgan Bailey examined the contents of her fridge.

She spotted a large bottle of store-bought kombucha, a fermented tea drink, hiding on the bottom shelf shoved behind a bunch of other items.

She wrapped her hand around the bottle to slide it towards her.

But when she touched the drink, it shattered.

“The second I touched the bottle it exploded,” Morgan tells 7Life how the fermented, lightly carbonated drink sent her to hospital Emergency.

Glass flew through the air and all over her kitchen — and the 32-year-old thanks her reading glasses and wedding ring from protecting her body from the full force of the explosion.

Now nursing numerous stitches in her hand, Morgan, from Mexico City, wants kombucha fans to be careful of the drink, especially if the bottles are ‘old’.

Before the incident, she would buy kombucha — known for its health benefits including probiotics and antioxidants — a few times a month.

But this particular time, as she unpacked her groceries, she pushed the drink to the back of the fridge and forgot about it.

“It was in there for a little under three months,” Morgan says.

“It was on the bottom shelf and I honestly completely forgot about it.”

When Morgan eventually spotted the drink, she went to check the expiry date before she consumed it.

“I went to grab it to see if it was still okay to drink, and the second my hand touched the bottle it exploded,” she says.

“It was a pretty large glass bottle and I think the pressure from my hand caused the glass to shatter.”

As she took the bottle to slide it towards her, its contents moved slightly inside.

The pressure of the fermenting liquid caused the bottle to explode, sending shards of glass across the room — a moment Morgan describes as “a literal bomb”.

The hand in which she was holding the bottle was sliced open, from in between her middle finger and rings finger spanning down her palm.

“My wedding ring stopped the glass from going deeper into my ring finger — it would’ve been a lot worse had I not been wearing it,” she says.

“It was pretty gross — I could see some stuff inside my hand.”

Glass also flew into Morgan’s face but she received no lasting injuries.

She immediately took herself to hospital where she received stitches to her hand.

“Thankfully there was no injury to bones or tendons,” she says.

After two weeks, doctors will remove the stitches and she should make a full recovery.

As for the “freak accident”, Morgan has never heard of this happening until now.

Explosion warnings

After sharing her story on social media, she has been inundated with comments of users sharing a similar experience.

Whilst relatively uncommon, fermented drinks do have a risk of exploding.

“As fermented foods contain live cultures, they can continue fermenting on the shelf after leaving the producer, resulting in increased alcohol content.,” The Queensland Government state.

“The continued fermentation process may also result in a buildup of gas in the package which can result in packaging exploding.”

Morgan jokingly urges owners of “old” kombucha to wear goggles and oven mitts before handling the fizzy drink.
