More than $100,000 raised for family of NSW man David Hogbin after his death in crocodile attack

The surviving wife and three children of a man killed by a crocodile in far north Queensland have been inundated with community support.

More than $112,000 has been raised for the family of David Hogbin as he is being remembered by people in his home city of Newcastle as an exceptional general practitioner and “amazing man”.

“Dave was always caring, relatable and willing to help where he could when my kids were sick,” wrote one person on the GoFundMe set up to support the family.

“He was always up for a chat and so obviously forever proud of his wife and three boys. My heart is heavy for you all.”

“Dave you were brave, you were kind, you were good. My deepest condolences to Jane and the boys, and the whole Hogbin family. Gone way too soon,” said another.

A third person said: “All-round great bloke, humble and grounded. Thinking of you and your family. Rest in peace, you will be dearly missed.”

Hogbin, 40, left behind wife Jane and their three young children when he was taken by a crocodile on the Annan River in Cooktown on Saturday.

A crocodile was caught and killed on Tuesday, before human remains believed to be Hogbin’s were found inside the animal.

His friend Alex Ward set up the crowdfunding campaign to help his “completely broken” family with the “immediate financial burden associated with such tragic events and support them while they try to navigate life without Dave”.

The original goal to raise $20,000 was quickly eclipsed.

Ward revealed in the GoFundMe that Hogbin was walking on a riverbank when the track gave way, plunging him into the water of the Annan River in Cooktown before he was attacked by the crocodile.
