More punishment for police officers caught in ugly NRL referee incident

The two-month long probe into the father and son police officers who disgraced themselves at a NRL game is over.

In a game between the Sydney Roosters and the Melbourne Storm at Allianz Stadium, the officers found themselves in hot water after one of them threw an object at the referee.

That officer was immediately sacked while the father — reportedly a high-ranking officer — remained under investigation for his role in the ugly incident.

Melbourne Storm won the game 18-12 and veteran referee Ashley Klein was in charge.

Some fans were left frustrated during the match due to some controversial bunker decisions.

Now, NSW Police have confirmed that the probe into the incident is over.

The high-ranking officer has been sanctioned but he has kept his position in the force.

“An officer was issued an infringement notice following an investigation into an incident involving two off duty police officers on Thursday April 18, at a football match in Moore Park,” a police spokesperson said.

“The probationary constable was dismissed from the NSW Police.

“An internal investigation into the incident has been finalised.”

A third person was also involved in the incident.

Venues NSW — which runs Allianz Stadium as well the SCG, Accor Stadium, CommBank Stadium, WIN Stadium and McDonald Jones Stadium — have banned the three people from all their venues for up to two years.

A Venues NSW spokesperson said at the time the ban was for “offensive behaviour”.

The NRL have also reportedly banned the officers from games.

The object did not hit or harm the referees.
