MLB Playoff Push: Tigers move half game back of Twins with sweep of Royals

The end is fast approaching and some teams are feeling it much more than others. Two teams managed to clinch their post-season berths today, becoming the first teams to do so in their respective leagues, but otherwise, stress ran rampant after another day of baseball.

In the American League, the New York Yankees gutted out an extra-innings win over the Seattle Mariners to become the first AL team to secure a playoff berth while the Detroit Tigers inched ever closer to a wild card spot by completing a sweep of the Kansas City Royals. They now sit a half-game back.


Meanwhile, in the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers clinched the NL Central and a playoff berth while the New York Mets continued their torrid closing stretch, demolishing the Washington Nationals and holding onto their two-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for the last wild card spot.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tarik Skubal allowed three hits over five innings for his 17th win, and the streaking Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Wednesday night to move within a half-game of a playoff spot with 10 games remaining.

Riley Greene hit a go-ahead home run as the Tigers (80-73) won their fourth straight and ninth in the last 11 games. With the series sweep, Detroit won for the 25th time in 35 games to move within a half-game of Minnesota (80-72) for the third AL wild-card spot.

Skubal (17-4), who has won his last five decisions, made his case for the AL Cy Young Award stronger by matching Atlanta’s Chris Sale for the major league lead in wins and lowered his AL-leading earned run average to 2.48. He walked one and struck out seven.

Skubal had struggled against the Royals in the past, entering Wednesday with a 2-9 record and 5.05 ERA in 12 starts over 14 appearances. After allowing three hits and Yuli Gurriel’s two-out RBI single in the first inning, he threw four hitless innings.

The Royals (82-71), who lost their fourth straight, were swept for the first time at home this season and the third time overall. They remained 2 1/2 games behind Baltimore for the first wild-card spot and 1 1/2 games ahead of Minnesota for the second wild card. The Orioles and Twins both lost earlier Wednesday.

CLEVELAND — Brayan Rocchio singled in Andrés Giménez with the winning run as the AL Central-leading Cleveland scored three times in the 10th inning to beat Minnesota, reducing their magic number for clinching a playoff berth to one.

Josh Naylor hit a pair of solo homers and scored three times for Cleveland, which leads the division by 5 1/2 games over Kansas City. Naylor’s first shot was a 445-foot rocket to right-center, giving him his first 30-homer season.

NEW YORK — Jose Quintana extended his scoreless streak to a career-high 22 2/3 innings and Brandon Nimmo’s three-run homer capped a nine-run fourth as New York beat the Washington Nationals to finish a three-game sweep.

Luisangel Acuña homered again for the Mets (84-68), who moved a season-high 16 games above .500 and stayed tied with Arizona for the second of three NL wild cards — two games ahead of Atlanta for the league’s last playoff spot.

Quintana (10-9) allowed two hits, walked two and struck out four in seven innings to complete his season-long dominance of the Nationals, whom he blanked over 21 innings in three starts.

Quintana hasn’t allowed a run since the third inning against the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 31. His previous career-best scoreless streak was 20 2/3 innings in 2014.

BALTIMORE — Mike Yastrzemski homered on the game’s first pitch, Michael Conforto also hit a solo shot and San Francisco beat Baltimore.

Baltimore has lost eight of 10 to fall 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Yankees in the AL East, pending New York’s late matchup with Seattle. Before their current skid, the Orioles held a half-game lead.

MIAMI — Shohei Ohtani stole his 49th base and moved closer to becoming the first player in major league history with 50 homers and 50 steals in a season as Los Angeles beat Miami.

Ohtani, who began the day two shy of each mark, singled to lead off the game then swiped second.

SEATTLE (AP) — Anthony Rizzo hit a tiebreaking double in the 10th inning and drove in both runs for New York as the Yankees clinched a playoff spot with a win over Seattle.

Rizzo lined the first pitch of the inning from Mariners reliever Collin Snider (3-4) down the right-field line to score automatic runner Jasson Domínguez from second base.

The Yankees managed only two hits against Mariners starter Bryce Miller, but scored two runs produced by Rizzo, who gave them an early lead with a run-scoring single in the second for his first RBI since Sept. 2.

Miller struck out eight over six innings while issuing four walks (one intentional). After a bumpy first few innings, Miller worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third and retired the final 10 hitters he faced.

But the Seattle offence failed to push a run across against former Mariners pitcher Nestor Cortes, who allowed four hits and struck out six in six shutout innings.
