Michael Mosley missing – latest: New CCTV appears to show last sighting of TV doctor on Greek island of Symi

Michael Mosley: Rescuers search Greek island for missing TV doctor

The search for Dr Michael Mosley is now a “race against time” as authorities on the Greek island of Symi shift their focus to a new mountain path.

The Telegraph reported that new CCTV footage, which has not been shared with the media, shows Mosley entering the path at the far end of Pedi at about 2pm on Wednesday.

The path is considerably harder to climb than the coastal path he took from Saint Nikolas beach to Pedi – which is where the search was initially focused.

It is believed that he may have been embarking on a three-hour hike to the town of Symi or Gialos.

One of the rescuers told the paper: “The path is not easy to follow, if he took a wrong turn, he would be lost. He could be anywhere; it is a race against time.”

The island’s mayor also told the Mirror that the water search had been called off in an effort to focus on the 2km of terrain between Pedi and Gialos.

The development comes just hours after new CCTV images appeared to show Mr Mosley walking in Pedi at 1:50pm – 20 minutes after he left the beach on Wednesday.

A man of his likeness can be seen shielding himself from the heat with an umbrella while wearing the same clothes shown in the last known photo of him.

It is believed that he may have been embarking on a three-hour hike back to the town of Symi or Gialos as it is also known.

One of the rescuers told the paper that his decision was “inexplicable”.

She said: “The path is not easy to follow, if he took a wrong turn, he would be lost. He could be anywhere; it is a race against time.”

Dr Mosley’s children reportedly flying out to Greece

Michael Mosley’s four children have reportedly flown to the remote Greek islands to join the search.

Alexander, Jack, Daniel and Katherine are planning to retrace his last known steps, the Telegraph have reported.

Speaking to the newspaper, his brother Arthur said: “We are very shocked and perplexed by what has happened to him. His children have now all gone to Greece and are walking the path trying to find him.

“We know as much as what the police and the media has reported, but we are closely following the situation, and hope that there’s a good outcome. Unfortunately, when you get to my age or his (Michael) age, accidents like this can happen.”

CCTV images appear to show Michael Mosley arrived in Pedi

New CCTV images appearing to show the last sighting of Dr Michael Mosley before he went missing on the Greek island of Symi have emerged.

Up until now, the TV personality was thought to have gone missing on a 20 minute coastal walk as he made his way back from Saint Nikolas beach to the nearby town of Pedi.

However, new images shared by local media appear to show a man of the 67-year-old’s likeness walking by the Blue Corner Cafe in Pedi at 1:50pm – 20 minutes after he left the beach on Wednesday.

He can be seen shielding himself from the heat with an umbrella wearing the same clothes shown in the final picture taken of him at the beach.

It comes after the mayor of the island told local media that eyewitnesses have claimed to have seen him in the town an hour after his disappearance.

Mosley’s wife, Dr Clare Bailey, raised the alarm after he failed to return back to their accommodation on Wednesday afternoon.

Police sources said on Thursday that they had expanded the search from the coastal path as “any and every attempt to track him down has not produced any result”.

Mayor’s daughter said ‘everybody’ on the island searching for Michael Mosley

The daughter of the mayor of the Greek island where TV doctor Michael Mosley has gone missing said she had been translating for her father while he deals with the media and authorities.

Mika Papakalodouka said her father, Eleftherios Papakalodouka, has been mayor of Symi for 22 years and that the island has around 300 permanent residents.

Ms Papakalodouka, 20, told the PA news agency she grew up on the island but now spends the majority of the year in Athens while studying maritime business remotely at Solent University, Southampton.

She said Symi’s community is “close”, adding “it is a small island, people talk. We’re good people actually here. Everybody is looking for him.”

Mr Mosley disappeared after going on a walk from Saint Nicholas beach, and Ms Papakalodouka said the path he is thought to have taken is “not dangerous at all, but we have 40C outside so it’s easy to get dizzy”.

Locals holding out ‘hope’ in search for missing doctor

Locals told Lucy Holden, who is in Symi reporting for The Independent, of “hope” but told stories that suggested he would not be found anytime soon.

“People are saying all sorts of things but one theory is that he took a boat from the island because it’s an easy hike along an old goat path, the walk he was on, and they’ve made it more safe up from the beach than it once was,” said the owner of one hotel near the port, where dozens of private charters and day-trips leave each day.

“From the goat path it’s a steep fall if he was dizzy with the heat, and it’s onto rocks below but it’s quite a wide path, enough for a group to walk along. It’s one way, you can’t go wrong, and it would be more dangerous in a car. That’s why lots of people are saying he must have got a boat along the way. Others are questioning whether he meant to leave like this, wanted to, because why not take your mobile phone? It doesn’t make sense,” she said.

The hotelier walked the same path to work every day last summer, she added, which made her feel “anxious” but generally, in Symi there is nothing to be anxious about.

“You don’t just fall off a path like that,” she explained. “It’s not a difficult walk in any way and it should have taken an hour or so – no more.”

Mosley could have boarded boat away from island, locals theorise

One of the wilder theories being considered by Greek locals on Symi, is that the TV doctor might have boarded a boat away from the island after failing to return to the house of friends with whom he was staying, Lucy Holden, in Symi for The Independent, reports.

Earlier today, the deputy mayor issued in a statement saying that emergency services – backed by support from Rhodes – had looked everywhere and that it was “impossible” he was still on Symi.

The authorities are now looking into whether he could have left the island on his own steam.

Having left the beach at 1.30pm wearing a royal blue polo-shirt, lightweight blue cargo shorts, a navy cap and sunglasses, the CCTV imagery showed a man in an almost identical looking outfit holding an umbrella in a way that suggested the person was shielding from the heatwave temperatures reaching up to 40C.

One line of investigation being explored is that the TV personality must have been overcome by sunstroke on the walk from the beach into Pedi and stumbled onto the cliff onto the rocks below.

Deputy mayor Ilias Chaskas said divers were searching the coastline with help of the Hellenic coastguard in order to rule out that possibility.
