Disgruntled customers have threatened to boycott McDonald’s, after some Australian stores made the move towards cashless payments.
A restaurant customer posted pictures on social media of signs at the entrance of Clayton South McDonald’s, in Melbourne’s south, advising patrons only card payments would be accepted at certain times of the day.
“For the ongoing safety of our staff and customers, we will no longer accept cash payments between midnight and 6am,” the sign read.

The angry customer called for others to boycott the branch.
“Boycott this Maccas,” they said.
“I don’t come here that regularly, but I have been for years and (have) only seen this today (for the) first time,” they said.
The customer said they asked staff why the outlet was going cashless, but wasn’t happy with their response.
“I instantly questioned them why? They say because they were robbed. Either way, I don’t care, I’m paying cash regardless,” they said.
The customer was hit with backlash from other social media users who argued it was a sensible move in protecting staff, while others agreed the choice to go cashless was inconvenient.
A McDonald’s spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au the decision to go cashless applied to restaurants in Melbourne’s east and south and that they would still accept cash if that was the only payment method available.
“The safety and wellbeing of our people and customers is our top priority,” the spokesperson said.
“In response to recent incidents, McDonald’s restaurants in Melbourne’s east and south have implemented a number of proactive safety measures to ensure the ongoing protection of our people and customers.
“This includes asking customers to use cashless payment methods where possible.
“We would like to thank our customers for their assistance and understanding as we continue to prioritise safety in our restaurants.”
