Martina Navratilova defends ‘childless’ Taylor Swift

Martina Navratilova has jumped to Taylor Swift’s defence — not that the superstar needs a saviour.

The tennis legend took aim at a “misogynistic” op-ed piece published in Newsweek that accused the singer of being a poor role model because she is 34 and has no husband or kids.

The legendary tennis player, 67, shared an excerpt from an article published by Newsweek last week in which writer John Mac Ghlionn contended the pop star is “not a good role model.”

“At 34, Swift remains unmarried and childless, a fact that some might argue is irrelevant to her status as a role model,” Mac Ghlionn wrote.

“But, I suggest, it’s crucial to consider what kind of example this sets for young girls.”

Ghlionn continued: “A role model, by definition, is someone worthy of imitation. While Swift’s musical talent and business acumen are certainly admirable, even laudable, we must ask if her personal life choices are ones we want our sisters and daughters to emulate.”

He added: “This might sound like pearl-clutching preaching, but it’s a concern rooted in sound reasoning.”

Navratilova re-tweeted Indian author Kiran Mandral — who described Ghlionn’s words as “barf inducing” and “vomit worthy” — before slamming the writer herself.

“A massive pile of misogynistic bull****,” Navratilova wrote on X.

“This guy should be ashamed of himself, and I can’t believe he writes for Newsweek… and they printed it. I mean…”

Users agreed with Navratilova, with many chiming in with their own disgust over the so-called think piece.

“I look forward to follow-up articles commenting about the failure of Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, Diane Keaton, Leo DiCaprio, Chris Evans, Jared Leto and Jon Hamm to be good role models by marrying and having children,” one person commented.

A second person wrote: “This would NEVER be written about a 30-something male celebrity who was unmarried and childless.”

Swift has not publicly addressed the article, but the singer has spoken candidly about the public’s obsession with her love life.

“It became clear to me that for me, there was no such thing as casual dating. Or even having a male friend who you platonically hang out with. If I was seen with him, it was assumed I was sleeping with him,” Swift wrote in the album notes for 1989 (Taylor’s Version), which was rerecorded last year.

“And so I swore off hanging out with guys,” the note continued. “Dating, flirting or anything that could be weaponized against me by a culture that claimed to believe in liberating women but consistently treated me with the harsh moral codes of the Victorian era.”
