Marner ‘probably won’t watch’ series featuring Maple Leafs

William Nylander’s appearance on the docuseries Faceoff: Inside the NHL is expected to pull in many viewers on Oct. 4, but teammate Mitch Marner isn’t likely be ready with his remote.

“I probably won’t watch it, to be honest,” Marner said at Wednesday’s practice. “I like watching other documentaries, sports documentaries and I’ll probably tune in a little bit. But I don’t think I’ll be sitting on the couch throwing that on at the first opportunity.” 

Marner was asked if scenes of the Leafs losing Game 7 in the playoffs to Boston, which were revealed at a Monday screening in Toronto, were just too difficult for him to re-live. 

“Not really, I don’t think it matters about that at all. I don’t know. I’m sure it will come on my TV at some point this year, but I won’t be jumping at the bit to watch it.”

There’s at least one uncomfortable scene involving Marner, the widely replayed spat on the bench during the Game 4 loss to Boston where he was frustrated and threw his gloves down as he was getting chastised for his petulant behaviour by Nylander. Marner’s poor playoff compared to Nylander’s impactful return from missing the series’ first three games was duly noted and led to much criticism of Marner during the summer, heightening speculation of a trade before the situation improved. 

The Amazon Prime series is in six parts, framed around opponents in various series counting down to the Stanley Cup final between Edmonton and Florida. Nylander is profiled with his longtime friend David Pastrnak of the Bruins.
