After originally being considered day-to-day with a sprained right ankle, Julio Rodriguez hit the 10-day injured list Tuesday.
The Seattle Mariners announced the move ahead of their game against the Los Angeles Angels.
Rodriguez wasn’t the only Mariner to hit the IL, however, as shortstop J.P. Crawford will miss some time due to a hairline fracture in his pinky.
Seattle has been struggling of late, losing the AL West lead to the Houston Astros, so Tuesday’s injury news might only extend the team’s recent skid.
Rodriguez, 23, left the Mariners’ win on Sunday, crashing into the wall while trying to make a leaping catch. He twisted his ankle on the padding of the wall in centre field, grabbed his ankle in pain and remained on the ground for several minutes before walking off the field with manager Scott Servais and trainer Taylor Bennett.
He went for X-rays after the game, which came back negative, and underwent an MRI on Monday afternoon.
Crawford left Monday’s loss to the Angels after being hit by a pitch on his right hand in the first inning.
In corresponding moves, Seattle recalled Jonatan Clase, Tyler Locklear, Cade Marlowe and Leo Rivas from triple-A Tacoma.
