As someone who was obsessed with Barbie as a kid, I’ve been equally obsessed with Margot Robbie‘s truly genius Barbie-related Easter eggs and references. The star and her glam team have taken cues form the entire Barbie universe, spanning all the way back to the very first doll in 1959, and each one delights me more than the last. For the 2024 SAG Awards, Robbie didn’t wear a couture recreation of a famous Barbie dress, but she did nod to the doll with her manicure.
Manicurist Betina Goldstein, who frequently works with Robbie and has been an integral part of the Barbie press tour, looked to one of Barbie’s most iconic accessories when doing Robbie’s nails for the night: her shoes! Yes, those little plastic pumps always went missing after you took the doll out of the box, but Barbie was never fully dressed without her heels.
Goldstein whipped up a sheer jelly manicure with a genius mix of Chanel nail polishes. âHer jelly pink nails are inspired by the classic vintage Barbie jelly shoes and color matched to her dress,â she wrote on Instagram, sharing a few inspo pics so fans could see exactly where the look originated. (Do they make those shoes in my size?) To create the translucent-but-not nails, Goldstein mixed four drops of Chanel’s Le Vernis Longwear Nail Color in Skieuse, a bubblegum pink, with one drop of Diva, a hot pink. She then added a drop of Sun Drop, a muted coral, and three drops of Le Gel Coat top coat not just for shine, but to get that jelly-like texture. The final shade matched Robbie’s delicate pink eye shadow and lipstick, plus the perfect pink of her Schiaparelli sash.
