Margot Robbie breaks her silence on Oscars snub for Barbie movie

Australian star Margot Robbie has broken her silence on her Oscars snub for her title role in the Barbie movie.

Neither Robbie nor director Greta Gerwig was nominated in their respective categories, leading actress and best director, sparking outrage online.

Robbie’s co-stars Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, who were both nominated, have expressed their disappointment at the snubs.

Speaking on a panel this week for a special SAG screening of Barbie, Robbie addressed missing out on an Academy Awards nod for her acting performance.

“There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed,” Robbie said, as reported by Deadline.

“Obviously I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is.

“But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”

Barbie holds the record as the sole billion-dollar film directed by a woman.

“I just suspect it’s bigger than us. It’s bigger than this movie, it’s bigger than our industry,” Robbie said of the phenomenon.

Regardless of the snubs, she said she was “beyond ecstatic” about the film’s nods from the academy.

“We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact,” she said.

“And it’s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would.

“And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

Barbie has been nominated for Best Picture.

Ryan Gosling was nominated for best supporting actor and America Ferrera for best supporting actress.

The film has also been nominated for best adapted screenplay, costume design and production design.

Gosling, who plays Ken to Robbie’s Barbie, released a rare personal statement after his co-star and director failed to be nominated.

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” he said.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.

“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history.

“Their work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees.

“Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

Ferrera’s nomination for best supporting actress made Robbie’s snub even more glaring.

“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it,” Ferrera said in a statement.

“Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon.

“It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”

The Oscars will be broadcast live at 11am AEDT on Channel 7 and 7plus on Monday March 11, with an encore screening that night after Australian Idol.
