Tragedy struck after a 21-year-old man, who had just been baptized an hour earlier in Lake Waxahachie, Texas, drowned in the same body of water after attempting to save a teenage girl, reported the Daily Mail.

Lincer Lopez had just “dedicated his life to God” during a baptism when he tried to save the drowning girl, who was part of the same church group as him.

Waxahachie Police Department said that while Lopez, who was pronounced dead at a hospital, didn’t succeed in his rescue attempts, a passing boater miraculously pulled the teenage girl from the lake and revived her with CPR.

“I haven’t really begun to, it hasn’t sunk in yet — it’s hard,” Jacob Bell, the boater who helped rescue the girl, told WFAA.

Bell, whose own brother drowned as a three-year-old, called Lopez a “hero.

“He had just been baptized and gave his life to the lord,” he said. “Our family, we pray for his family and we pray for the little girl’s family. And he was a strong boy, they should be very proud of him.”

Lopez’s uncle told WFAA in Spanish that the young man had been so excited about his baptism he was unable to sleep the night before.

The uncle also said that Lopez worked in construction to support his seven younger siblings in Mexico, where they live along with his parents.

“He was a hero,” said the uncle. “He didn’t think twice about rescuing someone else. He didn’t think about the risk that he could die. And he did risk his life to save somebody else’s.”

A GoFundMe page, which was set up to help Lopez’s family return his body to Mexico, had reached $8,985 of its $25,000 goal by Monday afternoon.
