Man dies after being swept into surf at unpatrolled beach in Yamba north of Coffs Harbour

A Sydney man has died after being swept into the surf at an unpatrolled beach on the NSW north coast.

The 24-year-old man was in shallow water at Pippi Beach in Yamba, north of Coffs Harbour, about 2.30pm on Monday when he was swept out to sea.

NSW Police say he signalled for help before disappearing.

Emergency services were notified and a search was launched including officers from the local police district and Marine Area Command, Surf Life Saving NSW, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and NSW Ambulance paramedics.

“About 6pm, the man was spotted by the helicopter crew and retrieved by surf-lifesavers,” police said.

He was unable to be revived and died at the scene.

Police have been told he was visiting from Sydney with a friend.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
