Lara Trump compares Harris to faux trash bag with $2,000 price tag

Republican National Committee Co-chair Lara Trump mocked Vice President Harris on Monday by comparing her to a designer handbag made to look like a bag of trash, as Republicans continue personal attacks on the Democrats’ leading presidential candidate.

Trump, the former president’s daughter-in-law, argued in a Fox News interview that Democrats are pushing Harris on the public like she’s a product for sale.

“It’s been incredible to see the way they have tried to prop up Kamala Harris and really sell her as some sort of — this amazing political figure,” Trump said. “It reminds me of there was this bag that a very famous designer designed, this is several years ago, and it literally was a trash bag, but they sold this thing for like $2,000 thinking that people would actually buy it. It’s a similar situation with Kamala Harris.”

Trump was referring to a handbag sold by Balenciaga designed to look like a trash bag as a form of head-turning high fashion.

As Democrats have quickly coalesced around Harris after President Biden ended his reelection bid, Republicans have increasingly made personal attacks against her, often focusing on her race and gender.

Multiple GOP lawmakers labeled the vice president a “DEI hire,” remarks that were denounced as racist and garnered pushback from top Republicans. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) urged fellow lawmakers to stop going after Harris’s race and gender last week.

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R), a top voice among moderate Republicans, urged former President Trump and the party to ease off the personal attacks on Sunday and focus on campaign issues as the race heats up.

Sununu said Trump should “stay away from the insults” when discussing Harris.

He said Trump missed an opportunity to do that in recent campaign events, but “hopefully they can get back on track. I think he was on track for a couple months there. I think that the change in the campaign has kind of fired him up to go against her, personally.”

However, the governor also acknowledged that “nobody can get Donald Trump to do anything. But hopefully the numbers, the polls, will get Donald Trump to realize what was working and what didn’t.”
