Kim Kardashian recently opened up about how a flare-up from psoriasis affected her preparation for a Met Gala event she’s attended in the past.
During an appearance on Tuesday’s episode of the “SHE MD Podcast,” the reality TV star discussed her journey living with psoriasis and how she once had a flare-up leading up to the annual star-studded fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.
While describing how she manages flare-ups that occur on different parts of her body, she said that she started to “get a little bit desperate” when her psoriasis started to affect her face.
“There was a spot really close to my eye, and it would just burn a little bit,” she said. “And I remember I had the Met ball coming up that week and it was covering my face.”
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder and chronic skin condition “characterized by inflamed, red, raised areas that often develop into silvery scales on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back,” John Hopkins Medicine states.
Elsewhere in the podcast episode, host Mary Alice Haney asked Kardashian if she thought her flare-up prior to the Met Gala was “stress-related.”
“I’m trying to think of what I was going through at that time,” the Skims co-founder responded, noting that that was the first time her condition affected her face.
“There’s a lot I could [say],” Kardashian added with a smile.
She then explained that her makeup artist used concealer on her face for the night of the event, and that she had tried out several skin care remedies.
“I fell asleep with like, tar patches on my face, and like, homeopathic creams,” she said. “I was literally drinking my tar teas, I was doing everything I could possibly do at that time.”
The reality star did not say the year of the Met Gala event, nor did she elaborate further on what might’ve caused her stress at that time, but she previously told Allure in 2022 that she had a psoriasis flare-up leading up to the Met Gala that year. It was the same year she was also widely criticized for announcing that she shed 16 pounds in three weeks to fit into one of Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dresses for the event.
Kardashian told the publication that around the time of that Met Gala she had been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, a form of arthritis that affects some people who have psoriasis.
“Joint pain, stiffness and swelling are the main signs and symptoms of psoriatic arthritis,” per the Mayo Clinic.
“Psoriasis broke out over my body and I got psoriatic arthritis so I couldn’t really move my hands,” she said, adding that it was “really painful.”
She attended the 2022 Met Gala with her ex-boyfriend, comedian Pete Davidson. She had filed for divorce from Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, the year prior.
