Kendra Scott-Wrangler collaboration faces social media backlash

(NewsNation) — Critics on social media are calling out jewelry designer Kendra Scott for her collaboration with Wrangler, pointing to her use of Native American design elements.

The Yellow Rose collection “was intentionally designed with variegated turquoise magnesite embellishments and embroidered rose motifs to provide sophisticated western looks for everyone from the urban cowgirl to the seasoned ranch hand,” according to a press release.

But once the collection of jewelry and clothing was revealed, TikTok users began calling out the use of Native American designs as well as the quality of the items.

One commenter noted that turquoise magnesite is less expensive and softer than real turquoise, making it easier to damage. It’s often dyed to look like turquoise.

While it may be cheaper, the collection is still pricey. Items in the collection include a turquoise magnesite ring for $110, drop earrings sold for $150 and a statement necklace that costs $495.

Critics also noted there are many Native artists working and selling authentic jewelry.

While there is a philanthropic element to the collection, it does not include donations to Native groups or causes. A total of 20% of the proceeds are set to be donated to a scholarship fund for Future Farmers of America.
