In recent weeks, Vance’s campaign as Donald Trump’s running mate has been tripped up by a internet joke that falsely claims the conservative Ohio senator wrote in his memoir about having sex with a couch.
So far, Vance’s camp has not discussed the made-up couch sex claim with media, and reportedly hung up on a “Last Week Tonight” staffer asking for confirmation on the issue.
The person behind the furniture fornication claim ― a social media user called @rickrudescalves ― admitted to Business Insider that he has “enjoyed thinking about [Vance’s] team and all of the idiots associated with him having to grapple with [the claim].”
It happened while Vance was praising his wife, Usha.
“Now, I would call her up here to come and speak,” he told the crowd. “But then I think I’d have to sleep on the couch tonight, so I’ll leave her alone.”
Although the rally crowd tittered along with Vance, many of the remarks made on social media were couched in sarcasm.
