Jay Slater missing latest: Teen’s friend reveals details of phone call from night he vanished in Tenerife

Lined with garish neon signs, booming music and ridiculously cheap drink deals, Veronica’s Strip in Tenerife could be seen as a British teenager’s heaven or a nightmare.

Young Britons appear to be the main clientele along the popular street in Playa de Las Americas, with hundreds gathering this week to celebrate the end of their A-Level results.

A mocked up Facebook post from one of the Slater’s family inner circle was shared with the message: “Jay’s body has been found. Our hearts are with his family in these evil times, we’ve heard from locals it was the job of the Morrocans [sic].”

The mother of Jay’s best friend Rachel Louise Harg, who also set up the GoFundMe page to go towards search efforts, was forced to amplify the cruel prank as she distanced herself from it, insisting the official update group: “This isn’t me.”

Jay Slater’s friend has said he could tell the teenager “went off the road” during one of the last phone calls he had before he went missing.

On their last phone call, Jay promised Brad he would call him back.

Brad explained: “He was on the phone and he goes: ‘I’ve got walk and go all down that road’.”

He said Jay had promised to call him back but hung up as “someone else was ringing him.”

Brad added he could hear Jay’s feet slide on the rocks, signalling to him his friend had “went off the road.. That’s how I knew he went off the road because, you know when you walk on gravel, or whatever it is, you can… you know what I mean, stones.”

Spanish Police have now made a call for volunteers to join the search for Jay Slater in Tenerife.

In an announcement today, the Civil Guard said they are organising a large-scale search operation and are requesting volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds to join, including experts in difficult terrain and firefighters.

Investigator Mark Williams-Thomas, 54, said: “A strong working hypothesis remains that Jay has come to natural harm in the terrain as he took the rugged course back down the hill from the point of his location drop , where I am confident now that he was at 8.50am last Monday morning.

“So for the police chief to issue a statement in Spanish asking local residents, who will know the area well, to join a massive co-ordinated search is a very good action to take .”

Former detective Mark Williams-Thomas flew over from the UK after offering the family his assistance, as Spanish police and sniffer dogs continue to scour the mountainous region in the north of the island.

Speaking to reporters in Costa Adeje, the TV sleuth said the family of the apprentice bricklayer are “very united” and focused on their mission to discover Mr Slater’s whereabouts.

Family and friends are attempting to keep Mr O’Sullivan’s story in the public eye by launching their own website, fundraising, and changing their Facebook profile pictures to his missing poster.

From the party vibes of the neon-lit strip of Playa De Las Americas to the spiritual hikes across cacti-infested ravines in the heat, there is something for everyone.

Brad added that Mr Slater did not seem concerned as the pair were both “laughing” as they spoke on the phone.

Jay Slater disappeared after attending the New Rave Generation music festival last Sunday evening in Papagayo Beach Club on the south of the island.

After making new acquaintances during the early hours of the morning, he travelled with two British men to a remote AirBnb, an 11-hour hike from his accommodation.

At around 8.15am last Monday, he contacted his friend Lucy Law and told her that he was lost, had injured his leg, was dehydrated and that his phone only had one per cent battery.

At 8.50am, his phone was last located near the Mirador La Cruz de Hilda cafe, a steep climb in the wrong direction from where an eyewitness had told him to head.
