Ikea to launch secondhand online market

(NewsNation) — Ikea, the Sweden-based furniture giant, is testing its own secondhand marketplace to let its customers sell to each other.

Ikea is already making secondhand matches in Madrid and Oslo, and the company hopes to roll out the new service worldwide by the end of the year.

For buyers, the site will look very much like Ikea’s web pages for new products. The difference is that it will show used items from sellers located near you. The listing will look just like a listing for a brand-new item that would appear on the main Ikea site.

If you’re selling, the site will take the pertinent information and ask you to upload photos. The site’s AI will then offer a list of items it believes are like the one you want to post. You choose the right product, fill in a bit more information and then wait for the buyers to reach out. You set the price, but Ikea will recommend a number based on the item’s age and condition.

Ikea won’t charge a commission on sales, but it’s offering an incentive to sellers in lieu of a cash deal. If sellers choose to get paid in Ikea credit, the company will add a 15% bonus to the total price.
