In a statement released ahead of the 25th anniversary of JonBenet’s death in 2021, the Boulder PD said that with the major advancements in DNA testing, they have updated more than 750 samples using the latest technology and still hope to get a match one day.
But John Ramsey has questioned whether that day will ever come, alleging some evidence still hasn’t been submitted to be reviewed with the more advanced DNA testing technology.
“We’ve had unidentified male DNA from January 1997,” he said in a Sept. 9, 2024 episode of True Crime News, “and this one prosecutor told me, ‘I’ve never, ever seen a police department try to explain away unidentified, male DNA in a sexual assault case.’”
And when host of True Crime News host Ana Gracia said “there are at least seven items which are considered critical evidence that have never been tested” at all, John replied, “To our knowledge, that’s correct. These items were sent originally in January 1997 to the lab for testing and were returned untested.”
One of these items, Garcia said, includes the garrote used in the strangling of JonBenét.
“I don’t know why they didn’t test it in the beginning, and, to my knowledge, it still hasn’t been tested,” John added. “If they’re testing it and just not telling me, that’s great. But I have no reason to believe that.”
E! News reached out to the Boulder Police Department for comment. However, they said they were unable to answer questions due to the investigation remaining active and ongoing.
