The star of The X-Files, The Crown and Sex Education rocked the red carpet in a glamorous, 1950s style off-white gown that had all the elegance and simplicity of the Grace Kelly era.
But it had a detail all over it that no star of Old Hollywood could ever have got away with.
The Gabriela Hearst gown had a very subtle design all over its fit-and-flare skirt: embroidered vaginas.
Yes, you read that right.
It’s a detail that not all the red carpet cameras picked up, but on closer inspection, you can see that those definitely aren’t flowers on the skirt.
Asked about her bold fashion choice, Anderson told Deadline: “I wore it for so many reasons. It’s brand appropriate.”
In the TV series Sex Education, Anderson plays a sex therapist whose home is adorned with phallic sculptures and ‘yonic art’, so in that sense, yes, the dress is very brand appropriate.
Speaking to British Vogue, she explained her gown choice in further detail.
“Since my Instagram presence has been highlighting yonis since Sex Education landed on Netflix, and with the mantra of my brand G-spot being to ‘prioritise pleasure’, I wanted to bring this element into the design,” she said.
“I’m so pleased Gabriela (dress designer) was up for the challenge.”
Posting a picture of her dress on Instagram, Anderson hashtagged the gown: #yonioftheday.
“Each yoni motif took about 3.5 hours to embroider and was made entirely in the garment district of NYC,” she wrote, sharing a video of her getting ready.
Yoni is an abstract representation of the female organ.
Fans went wild over the dress.
“Goddess,” one follower wrote.
“It was the best (vagina) themed dress I’ve ever seen, bar none!” wrote another.
“God, you really are the queen of everything,” a third said.
One fan described the dress as “perfect” while another said it was “iconic”.
“I love how you express yourself, Gillian, you are truly an inspiration,” said one follower.
Another said they wanted to renew their wedding vows in such a dress.
Not all fashion followers managed to work out what the dress print was all about, however.
People Magazine reported that the gown was emblazoned with peonies, while InStyle described the frock as “cream on cream with floral embroidery”.
