Four easy at-home exercises to get rid of your ‘turkey neck’

As we age it is inevitable that our appearance starts to change. This includes our skin that becomes thinner over time, making it more prone to wrinkles.

A reduction of elastin and collagen in the skin also makes it saggy. An area of the body this is most evident is perhaps the neck – creating something known as a “turkey neck”.

While we can’t reverse time or completely change our appearance through lifestyle changes, we can make a noticeable difference. And according to one expert, certain exercises could help to achieve just that.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Gavin Cowper – exercise expert and owner of Exersci, shared four exercises that can target a turkey neck. He explained: “Exercises that target the area around the neck can help reduce the appearance of a turkey neck, which is characterised by sagging and wrinkles.

“The neck can look better if the muscles are toned and strengthened, and the skin and muscles can be made tighter with exercises such as band resistance training, head tilts, chin lifts, and neck stretches.”

Neck stretches

Gently tilt your head forward, backward, and sideways, holding each position for about 10 to 15 seconds.

Gavin said: “This helps stretch and lengthen the neck muscles.”

Head tilts

Sit or stand comfortably, then tilt your head to one side, bringing your ear towards your shoulder.

Hold for a few seconds and repeat on the other side.

“This exercise targets the muscles along the sides of the neck,” Gavin said.

Chin lifts

Stand straight, tilt your head back, and look at the ceiling. Pucker your lips as if you’re kissing and hold for a few seconds.

Gavin commented: “This exercise tones the muscles under the chin and along the front of the neck.”

Resistance training with bands

Loop the band around the back of your head and gently push your head forward against the resistance of the band, then pull your head backward against the band’s resistance.

Again, this helps strengthen the neck muscles.

Another expert, Tunc Tiryaki – a consultant plastic surgeon, added that good skincare, diet and other lifestyle habits could affect the skin around your neck.

Your facial skincare regime should always be extended to the neck and low neckline, he said.

Mr Tiryaki said: “Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and peptides to hydrate and plump the skin.

“Exosomes are also another powerful ingredient which helps combat ageing of the skin at a cellular level.

“Always wear sunscreen on your neck to prevent further damage as UV rays accelerate skin ageing.”

He advised drinking plenty of water and consuming foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids to support good skin health.

He added: “Avoid smoking, which decreases blood flow and increases collagen breakdown, which is responsible for maintaining the skin’s elasticity and firmness.”
