Dutcher had been a teacher at Seymour College in Glen Osmond, in Adelaide for 17 years.

His father, Jerry Dutcher, said Leland had uploaded pictures of him riding along a beach the day he was killed.

“He loved riding, and it was a glorious day … he was living the life he loved to the very end,” Jerry said in a Facebook post.

Leland was on leave from his position in 2023, Seymour College said in a Facebook post.

Leland brought “exceptional qualities” to the classroom, and he would be “greatly missed by all the colleagues, friends and students who were blessed to have known him,” the post read.

“He has worn many College hats and always delivered excellence and absolute commitment to his leadership and teaching roles.

“Most of all, in the classroom, Leland taught his students to truly love maths and believe in themselves as learners.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, close friends and everyone who knew and loved him … may he rest in peace”

Leland’s former students detailed their personal experiences with him in the comment section of the post and said he was a memorable teacher who made learning a joy.

“What an immense loss. The only reason I ever tolerated maths was Mr Dutcher’s guitar and passion for every classroom he entered. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones … truly one of the best,” one person commented.

“Words cannot express the tragic loss of such a kind and inspirational teacher who had a profound effect on those who were lucky enough to know and be taught by him. He will be greatly missed and will never be forgotten,” wrote another.

Leland’s family have been contacted for comment.
