Dolphins free-agent addition abruptly retires

Barrett added that while this decision may seem like a surprise, he has been contemplating it for a while.

He played nine years in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, putting together an outstanding career that saw him make two Pro Bowls, lead the NFL in sacks (19.5) during the 2019 season and win Super Bowls with both the Broncos and Buccaneers.

He played in 16 games for the Buccaneers during the 2023 season, recording 4.5 sacks.

The Buccaneers released him after the season, a move that left Barrett angry as he vowed to make them regret the decision.

Miami’s defense was definitely in need of some help after a poor 2023 showing, and Barrett figured to add some important pass-rushing depth to that side of the ball. Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb are both coming back from season-ending injuries and starting training camp on the PUP list, so there are still some big questions for the defense early on. The retirement of Barrett only adds to them early on.

Dolphins veteran players report to camp this week.
