Republican Geoff Duncan, who was until last year the lieutenant governor of Georgia, slammed his party’s presidential nominee, calling Trump “a direct threat to democracy.”
“His actions disqualified him from ever, ever, ever stepping foot in the Oval Office again,” Duncan said at the DNC. As lieutenant governor, he witnessed Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in his state.
“I’m certain I don’t have to talk anybody out of voting for Donald Trump here,” Duncan said. “So I’m going to focus my attention on the millions of Republicans and independents that are at home who are sick and tired of making excuses for Donald Trump.”
“If Republicans are being intellectually honest with ourselves, our party is not civil or conservative. It’s chaotic and crazy. And the only thing left to do is dump Trump,” he said, going on to say the GOP was functioning “more like a cult” devoted to a “felonious thug.”
One of his final lines attracted chants of “USA!” from the crowd.
“Let me be clear to my Republican friends at home watching: If you vote for Kamala Harris in 2024 you’re not a Democrat, you’re a patriot,” Duncan said.
