The event was in Fort Worth’s Marine Creek Lake, near Dallas, Texas.
The Fort Worth Fire Department said they were called to the area around 8am (local time) because there “was a participant in the water that was down and hadn’t been seen in some point in time”.
After the death was confirmed, CrossFit CEO Don Faul released a statement (Thursday local time).
“CrossFit is deeply saddened by the death of a CrossFit Games competitor during the swimming portion of Individual Event 1 at the 2024 CrossFit Games,” CrossFit CEO Don Faul said.
“We are fully co-operating with authorities and doing everything we can to support the family at this time.”
Faul was emphatic that there was a safety crew at the event.
He said the CrossFit community was like a family.
“We’re doing everything in our power during this tragic time to support the family, to support our community,” he said.
Đukić went missing during the swimming leg of the individual run-swim.
The event started with a 5.6km run and finished with an 800m swim.
It appears in the livestream that as the swimmers headed for the finish line, one competitor stops in the water.
However, it has not been confirmed if that swimmer was Đukić.
At the moment all eyes were on the competitors who were racing to the finish line.
“It’s all hindsight now because you didn’t know what was going on at the time,” spectator Kaitlin Pritchard told the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
She said it first looked like the swimmer was tired and had just changed his stroke.
“There wasn’t that immediate notification of, ‘Oh, someone was missing’. I mean, people were still swimming over him where he went down.”
The cause of death has not been listed.
