ELVERS SEIZED AT TORONTO PEARSON AIRPORT

Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency seized between $400,000 and $500,000 worth of elvers at Toronto Pearson International Airport this week.

The seizure of approximately 109 kilograms of unauthorized elvers – baby eels – was made Wednesday evening, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) explained in a statement released Friday.

“The elvers were destined to be shipped overseas,” the federal government agency said. “An investigation into this matter, for violations under the Fisheries Act, is now underway.”

The DFO announced on May 11 that the elver fishery would not open this year “due to conservation and safety concerns.”

And anyone caught fishing for elvers would face enforcement actions under the Fisheries Act and the Maritime Provinces Fishery Regulations.

“The magnitude of this elver seizure is an important development,” Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and Canadian Coast Guard Diane Lebouthillier said. “It reflects all the work done by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, but also the team effort of a wide range of agencies and departments involved across government.

“Once again, our message is crystal clear: do not travel to Nova Scotia to illegally fish or export elvers this year, enforcement officers will be waiting for you,” she added.

On Friday, the girls appeared before an Ontario Court Justice.

Eight girls – three 13-year-olds, three 14-year-olds and two 16-year-olds – were originally charged with second-degree murder for the swarming.

The girls cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

In May, a court ruled six of the girls would face trial on the second-degree murder charge and two will face manslaughter.

Another three of the eight girls charged in Lee’s murder reportedly asked through their counsel on Friday to be sent for trial in Superior Court.

One girl remains in custody in a youth detention facility while the others are out on bail.

Ken Lee was stabbed to death during a warming in downtown Toronto, allegedly by a group of teenaged girls, on Dec. 18, 2022.
