Couple unaccounted for after townhouse fire in Lake Macquarie

A couple is unaccounted for after a townhouse fire broke out in Lake Macquarie, north of Sydney.

About 4am on Thursday, emergency services were called to the home at Teralba after reports a two-storey townhouse was on fire.

NSW Ambulance confirmed to 7NEWS.com.au multiple crews were sent to the home.

Two residents are understood to be unaccounted for after the blaze, The Newcastle Herald reports.

“We’re working with police to try and locate them,” Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Superintendent Mathew Sigmund told the masthead.

Some 60 firefighters are believed to be on scene battling the blaze.

Residents were evacuated from adjoining homes as crews continue their operation.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

“Police are on scene investigating the cause of the blaze,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Localised traffic diversions are in place, with motorists urged to avoid the area.
