Lewis was best known for his work on the sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm which started in 2000. The 12th and final season premiered in February 2024.
He starred alongside Larry David, Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines.
Lewis also had roles in Robin Hood: Men In Tights and Daddy Dearest.
Singer and actress Bette Midler was the first to speak out on his death, writing on X: “On a sad note, the great Richard Lewis has died.”
In April 2023, Lewis revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease after a brain scan in 2021.
Parkinson’s disease is a “progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves,” according to Mayo Clinic.
“Luckily I got it late in life, and they say you progress very slowly if at all and I’m on the right meds and it’s cool,” Lewis said at the time.
“I just wanted you to know that that’s where it’s been at.
“I’m finished with stand-up, I’m just focusing on writing and acting. I have Parkinson’s disease but I’m under a doctor’s care and everything is cool and I love my wife, I love my little puppy dog and I love all of my friends and my fans.”
Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease begin slowly and start as a tremors, stiffness or slowing of movement.
