Coles confirms major change to 2L and 3L milk range, effective immediately

Coles has confirmed a major change to its range of own brand milk in hundreds of stores across the country.

The supermarket giant has revealed that it is phasing out the use of plastic bottle seals on all its cartons of milk.

Up until now, Coles have used the frustrating seals – which had to be pulled off by customers after they’d removed the lid from a new carton – to reduce the risk of spills and leaks.

Coles has now shared signage in many stores across the country telling customers of the change, which is being rolled out nationally.

A spokesperson for the supermarket said the move means Coles milk cartons are now recyclable.

“Coles is always looking for ways to reduce unnecessary plastic from circulation and while our seals were originally used to reduce instances of leaking bottles, over time, packaging design of both the bottle and the lid have improved and the seals are no longer required,” the Coles spokesperson said.

“This decision to no longer require seals on Coles milk will see more than 10,000kg of plastic removed from circulation when this packaging change is completed nationally.”

The change was spotted by a Coles customer who shared a photo of signage in stores notifying customers of the change.

Sharing on X – formerly known as Twitter – the shopper pointed out that their carton had a seal, despite the in-store notice.

7NEWS.com.au understands that Coles’ milk suppliers have spent the last 12 months changing their processing sites to make this change possible, however not all sites have introduced the new packaging.

Given not all suppliers have made the change, the signage featured in the social media link appears to have been put on display in the wrong state. Coles is investigating.
