The Kansas City Chiefs will be sitting their franchise quarterback for their season finale on Sunday. Patrick Mahomes will not play for the final regular season game against the Los Angeles Chargers and backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert will take the start, coach Andy Reid said on Wednesday.
With their 10-6 record, and officially locked into the No. 3 seed, the AFC West Divisional Champions and defending champions will give Mahomes a break before heading into their ninth consecutive playoffs.
The two-time Super Bowl MVP finishes a frustrating season by his standards with 4,183 yards in the air and 27 touchdowns on the season, his lowest totals for both since the 2019 season. Mahomes also threw a career-high 14 interceptions.
Gabbert has posted a 51-touchdown, 49-interception ratio in 68 total starts across his 12-year career. This will be his first start for the Chiefs.
