Cause of death for Dana Carvey's son, Dex, released by coroner

(NEXSTAR) – Dex Carvey, the 32-year-old son of comedian and actor Dana Carvey, was killed by fentanyl, ketamine and cocaine toxicity, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner found.

The manner of death was determined to be accidental, according to the coroner. No other causes or complicating factors were listed in the report.

The findings were released two months after Dex Carvey was found dead in his home on Nov. 15, 2023.

Carvey and his wife Paula had previously announced Dex died from an accidental drug overdose. A few days later, Carvey confirmed he would be taking a break from acting and social media in the wake of the family’s tragedy.

“[We are] trying to figure out what life looks like now that we are a family of three,” he wrote in a post shared to X (formerly Twitter) in November. “We will heal the best we can and carry on. Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way.”

When he returned to co-host the latest episode of his “Fly on the Wall” podcast with David Spade, Carvey said, “If you’re listening to our podcast right now, you probably know about my family’s loss. And I just want to say that the amount of outpouring — online and emailing and people I still haven’t been able to call back — is incredible.”

Dex Carvey followed in his father’s footsteps with a short career in the entertainment industry. He acted in and edited a few mini-series and shorts. He also appeared on one 2011 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” according to his IMDb page.
