Carrie Coon Put a Couture Spin on ‘The Gilded Age’ at the 2024 Emmys

While Carrie Coon was thrilled to be nominated for an Emmy for her role as Bertha Russell in The Gilded Age, she was even more excited to turn her trip into a mini vacation. “My husband and I left the kids in New York, so I slept nine hours,” she tells Vogue. “I can’t remember the last time we had the pleasure of sitting down to eat breakfast together and talk without interruption.” Worry not though, her nomination was a family affair. “My parents and one of my brothers and his family were visiting, so it was fun to share the morning with them, surrounded by kids and breakfast chaos,” she says. “I don’t think any of us anticipated moments like this when I decided to go for my MFA in theater.”

Coon and her husband, fellow 2024 Emmys nominee Tracy Letts, turned to Thom Browne for their big day—fitting since she recited “The Raven” for the designer’s fall 2024 show.

Coon, who was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, chose look 40 from Browne’s fall 2024 couture collection. While the off-white wool crepe and double duchess silk dress has notes of Browne’s signature tailoring, it also resembled a deconstructed version of something her Gilded Age character, Bertha, might wear—thanks to the high collar, strong shoulder, and exaggerated hip. “I love Thom Browne’s designs. Every detail is carefully considered and so thoroughly and beautifully realized,” Coon says of her outfit choice for the evening. “This piece from his 2024 Couture collection is both modern and timeless, with elements that give a sly nod to both Bertha Russell and menswear in the Gilded Age.”

And, in case you were wondering, the Emmy nominees get just as starstruck as everyone else. “Tracy and I will go to a couple of parties and try and fawn over as many people as we can. One of the pleasures of the evening is telling other artists how much we enjoy their work,” she says. “We won’t dance the night away, though—we have a to catch an early flight and relieve the nanny!”
