Call for information after high-profile surfer Guy Haymes found fatally injured in Manly unit

The shattered family of a high-profile surfer found fatally injured in a Sydney unit earlier this year is pleading for help from the public after being “left without answers”.

Guy Haymes, 59, was found with critical head injuries at a unit complex on Pittwater Rd in Manly after police responded to reports of an assault in February.

He was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital but died from his injuries less than a month later.

Haymes, known to his friends as “Creature”, was well known in surfing communities around Sydney, including in the Northern Beaches and Wollongong.

Northern Beaches Police said detectives had conducted extensive inquiries but were now turning to the public for more information as Haymes’ family had “been left without answers”.

“Guy was fun-loving and sociable, and he got along with everyone,” Haymes’ brother Mark said.

“Our whole family is shocked and in disbelief that he had his life cut short – and in such a brutal way.”

Mark said not knowing what happened the day his brother died, and having no answers, “is the hardest part”.

“It was tragic, and we can’t imagine that anyone would want to hurt him,” he said.

NSW Police said they were calling on the community for help as they continued to investigate Haymes’ death.

“We know there are people out there who have information about this assault. We need those people to come forward,” Detective Superintendent Patrick Sharkey said.

“My detectives will not stop until we have those answers.”

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Northern Beaches Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
