British teacher pens heartbreaking final X post to announce death from cancer

A British mother-of-two penned a heartbreaking final post to announce news of her death from cancer.

Manchester teacher Kate Rackham was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2016 at the age of 39 despite having no known risk factors. She later developed incurable metastatic or secondary breast cancer.

“If you’re reading this, it means I have died,” she wrote to her 14,000 followers on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday.

“But do not cry for me. I have lived my life on my own terms, the way I have wanted to.

“I joined X because I needed an outlet, what I got was so much more. You made me feel validated in my feelings and much less alone.

“Thank you.”

Rackham had amassed thousands of followers while sharing updates during her cancer journey on the account, Teacher with Cancer.

She was also the co-founder and Trustee of the Fighting To Be Heard Foundation – which aims to raise awareness about incurable secondary breast cancer where the primary cancer spreads to other parts of the body.

The most common being the bones, liver, lungs and brain, according to Cancer Australia.

The five-year survival rate for women with metastatic breast cancer at first diagnosis is 32 per cent compared to the 91 per cent average for all breast cancer patients, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

Rackham’s last health update came on June 7, when she revealed that doctors had told her “there is nothing more we can do”.

“I’m now home, where I want to be, with Mark and the girls. Surrounded by love, family and friends. Everyone is rallying around and I have so much support,” she wrote.

“Despite everything, I feel blessed.”
