Boygenius’s 2024 Grammys Outfits Pay Homage to Their Song Lyrics

After a touring season filled with Thom Browne suiting, it’s no surprise that the members of Boygenius—Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker—stuck with the designer for the 2024 Grammys. The trio come heavily nominated tonight, earning five nods from the Recording Academy, including for Album of the Year and Record of the Year. (Prior to the start of the ceremony, they already claimed their first award: Best  Rock Performance for “Not Strong Enough.”)

Bridgers, Dacus, and Baker once again opted for coordinated outfits, wearing off-white Thom Browne suits with a woodgrain-like pattern. Underneath their blazers—which were trimmed in satin and complete with a white armband—they wore sheer white button-downs and black neckties. Their cropped cigarette pants showed off black patent leather Oxfords and black socks.

Eagle-eyed fans will note that all three members wore a pink carnation pinned to their lapels—a clear homage to lyrics from “We’re In Love”: “In the next one, will you find me? / I’ll be the boy with the pink carnation / Pinned to my lapel, who looks like hell and asks for help / And if you do, I’ll know it’s you.”

The song was penned by Dacus, who wrote it as an ode to her bandmates, along with the worries she feels about finding them in another life. During a Q&A at the El Ray Theater in Los Angeles last year, she revealed that the carnation was originally meant to be white, and Bridgers suggested she change it to pink in honor of the Marty Robbins song “A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation).” She also noted that it was a reference to Elliott Smith, who was coerced into removing the flower from his lapel at the 1998 Academy Awards.

The pink carnation also signifies gratitude, a particularly poignant note since the band is going on hiatus after tonight.
