Only then could Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters gain access to the residence, where they found the man’s body in the bedroom.

“He has not yet been identified but is believed to be the occupant, aged in his 70s,” NSW Police said.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, but police were told it “may have started in the fireplace” and specialist investigators will examine the scene on Monday.

“The home did not appear to have smoke detectors fitted,” police said.
