BMW to bring humanoid robots to South Carolina facility

(NewsNation) — Figure, a manufacturer of autonomous humanoid robots, announced it has partnered with BMW to deploy robots in the carmaker’s South Carolina facility.

The robots, according to Reuters, “will be integrated into the manufacturing processes, including the body shop, sheet metal and warehouse in the next 12-24 months, after being trained to perform specific tasks.”

The partnership will start with small quantities and expand if performance targets have been met, according to Brett Adcock, chief executive at Figure.

According to TechCrunch, the plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, is BMW’s only facility in the U.S. As of 2019, the 8 million-square-foot campus produced the most product out of all the German manufacturer’s factories in the world.

The Spartanburg facility currently employs about 11,000 people.

Figure did not disclose how many robots BMW will be using.
