Doherty revealed in June last year that her cancer had metastasised, spreading to her bones and her brain.
“I always talk about the fact that we just need to squeeze out another three to five years, and then there’s going to be T-cell therapy or there’s going to be this,” she said on the podcast.
“There’s going to be a lot more options that will give another five years.
“Then in those five years, there’s a whole other group of options, and eventually there’s going to be a cure.”
Doherty was speaking to her oncologist Dr Lawrence Piro in the episode, who likened cancer treatment to a “horse race”.
“I always say that it’s important to think of each therapy as a horse, and in a horse race, you want to ride every horse as long as it rides, and then you ride the next horse as much as possible … you hope you make it a few laps then there’s altogether another new set of horses to ride, to make the race that much longer,” he said.
Doherty responded: “I’m riding those horses so I get to the fresh set of horses, and I’m trying to get the one I’m on right now to last for as long as humanly possible.”
Sharing part of her Let’s Be Clear podcast to Instagram on Tuesday, Doherty wrote: I am very proud of this episode.”
“This is Dr Lawrence Piro, my oncologist and one of the most intelligent, compassionate and skilled humans I know,” she added.
“I hope this episode brings insight and a deep understanding of cancer for not just the person with it, but those who stand beside us through the journey.
“Happy new year.”
Fans flocked to the comments section to wish Doherty well.
“Thanks for the insight and your helpful knowledge,” one follower wrote.
“So proud to be your lifelong fan since you were on Little House (on the Prairie).”
“I’m out 20 years from surviving lymphoma and I’ve followed you since 90210 and Charmed,” wrote another.
“One of my favorite actresses.
“I hope your treatments keep working well and you feel well.”
“You give me strength to fight my cancer too,” said a third.
“The chemotherapy doesn’t work anymore.
“I live life day by day.”
‘I’m not done with living’
The Beverly Hills 90210 actress was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.
She went into remission in 2017, but by 2020 her cancer had returned as a stage 4 diagnosis.
In an interview with People magazine, Doherty stated that she was “not done with living”.
“I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating,” she said.
“I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better.
“I’m just not — I’m not done.”
Doherty reportedly has her sights set on returning to Hollywood, pushing ahead with her acting career after splitting from Kurt Iswarienko, her husband of 11 years.
The actress is going “full steam ahead” with her acting career and has “a plethora of gigs on the horizon,” a source told TMZ.
Doherty has also been attending gigs and events within the industry, such as her recent appearance at the 90s Con in September 2023.
The split from her husband was confirmed late in 2023, with the actress revealing that on the day she went in for brain surgery, she found out Iswarienko was involved with another woman.
“I went into that surgery early in the morning and I went in after I found out that my marriage was essentially over, that my husband had been carrying on an affair for two years,” she said on the December 6 episode of her podcast.
“To not go in that surgery — even though, being very clear, he wanted to go — I couldn’t go into that surgery with him there.”
Doherty added that she felt “so betrayed”.
“At the end of the day, I just felt so incredibly unloved by someone I was with for 14 years, by someone I loved with all my heart,” she said.
Iswarienko went on to publicly deny the affair and claimed he and Doherty had been living apart for two years before her brain surgery.
He also claimed he and Doherty had agreed to have an “open marriage” — a claim Doherty later denied in a series of furious Instagram posts.
