Best new lip balm: The Ordinary releases its first-ever lip balm and Best Picks editor gives her honest thoughts

As any self-respecting girl will know, winter is the thief of good skin.

Whether it’s random dry patches, flaky chins or the dreaded dry lips, we have to work hard when it comes to our complexions in the cooler months — and there’s nowhere I feel this more than with my pout.

This is why I carry around an amalgamation of random lip balms in every coat pocket, handbag and crevice as soon as the temperatures drop.

And this is particularly why my ears pricked up when I heard about the latest launch from cult skincare brand The Ordinary.

Today (June 21), on the winter solstice in Australia, The Ordinary has released its first-ever lip balm.

What is The Ordinary’s Squalane and Amino Acids Lip Balm?

For $16.30, we’re promised a “science-backed multi-use moisturising balm” designed to hydrate the lips, elbows and even your cuticles.

Formulated with the well-loved hydrator Squalane, the balm also contains a unique blend of Amino Acids that help to retain and seal in moisture, while also offering noticeably softer skin.

The Ordinary says the balm can be used for “all-day hydration and barrier support”.

Targeting dryness specifically, it’s designed as both a one-stop-shop to hydration, as well as the ideal final step in your daily and nighttime skincare regime.

So, how did I go when I tested the lip balm and would it replace the other emotional support balms I religiously carry around everywhere and routinely apply?

What were my first impressions?

The first thing that absolutely has to be said about this $16.30 lip balm is its packaging is so cute.

Unlike any other lip balm I’ve ever tried, The Ordinary’s product retails in a stylish teardrop shape.

But you needn’t be fooled that this means less product than the standard tube.

There is still 15mL crammed into its cute little shape, which is much in line with other lip balms (which tend to house between 10 and 15mL).

Shape aside, I also love that the lip balm is in keeping with The Ordinary’s stylish and simple aesthetic.

Sold in a white tub with black writing, it looks stylish and chic on any bedside table or in any bag, and I have been carrying it around with me for the past few weeks.

How was the first test?

Upon first application, I had a few notes about The Ordinary’s lip balm.

Unlike many balms being sold right now, it goes on clear and feels lighter.

The texture is oily rather than thick, and it kind of soaks in, unlike other balms that sit on the lips for hours — implying that it is actually doing the business of hydrating your pout.

I love the look of this lip balm both by itself and when worn over the top of a lip liner or lipstick.

I also love that it gives a shiny finish, meaning you always feel put together when wearing this product, even on a no-makeup day with your hair scraped back.

What is the verdict?

After using The Ordinary’s lip balm for three weeks, I can safely say it has shot to the top of my list as a favourite product and a must-buy for winter.

I’ve found that it’s fantastic for smoothing out dry lines and dehydrated spots on my lips, and I do also love using it on random dry patches of skin too now — whether that’s my elbows, knees, cuticles or hands.

I love that the balm soaks in quickly, giving a quick shot of hydration.

While at first I was nervous that it soaking in meant it wasn’t doing much, I have since figured out that this actually means it’s doing the most.

My lips have never looked better, despite the rest of me shrivelling up thanks to a combination of heavy office heating and outside cold temperatures.

I will be hitting the ski slopes later this year and have already bookmarked this lip balm as the product to take with me, it’s that good.

Early reviews agree, with a 4.9 star rating on The Ordinary’s website.

I really like this lip balm, it is super hydrating on the lips and locks in moisture,” one reviewer posted.

“I generally avoid scented lip balms to minimise unnecessary ingredients,” another added.

This lip balm, which contains no fragrance, includes squalane for excellent moisturisation and helps repair my cracked lips.

“The cute packaging and small size make it perfect for travel.”
