(NewsNation) — Sen. Bernie Sanders has shown unwavering support for President Joe Biden despite fellow Democrats calling for him to step aside from fellow Democrats.
In an opinion piece published in The New York Times Saturday, Sanders urged Democrats to stay unified notwithstanding concerns over Biden’s cognitive competency.
“It’s time for Democrats to stop the bickering and nit-picking,” Sanders wrote. “Mr. Biden may not be the ideal candidate, but he will be the candidate and should be the candidate.
“I understand that some Democrats get nervous about having to explain the president’s gaffes and misspeaking names,” Sanders said.
“But unlike the Republicans, they do not have to explain away a candidate who now has 34 felony convictions and faces charges that could lead to dozens of additional convictions…”
The Vermont independent criticized media coverage of Biden following his gaffe-laden performance in the June debate; which has led to 18 Democrats calling for him to quit.
“For over two weeks now, the corporate media has obsessively focused on the June presidential debate and the cognitive capabilities of a man who has, perhaps, the most difficult and stressful job in the world,” Sanders wrote.
“The media has frantically searched for every living human being who no longer supports the president or any neurologist who wants to appear on TV. Unfortunately, too many Democrats have joined that circular firing squad.”
Sanders noted that while he disagreed with Biden on a variety of topics including the war between Israel and Hamas, he believes the incumbent “has been the most effective president in the modern history of our country” and the “strongest candidate” in 2024.
The 82-year-old also used the op-ed to criticize former president Donald Trump, labeling him a “demagogue and pathological liar.”
