A beloved café in Sydney’s inner west has announced it will be closing its doors after over 12 years in business.
Cornersmith, has been a popular café in the Inner West ever since it opened in Marrickville in 2011.
The Annandale site opened in 2016 and became the only outlet when the Marrickville location closed in 2019.

However, the café announced during the week it would now be shutting the Annandale café.
“Hello friends. The time has come for us to change things up at Cornersmith!” husband and wife owners Alex Elliott-Howery and James Grant said in a statement on the café’s website.
“The short story is we are closing the Annandale café doors at the end of the month and having a breather from the intensity of running our own hospo business.”
The couple said the café’s story was not over, however.
“We’re just ready for the next chapter in our business and life,” they said.
“We are incredibly proud of our more than 12-year long stint surviving the Sydney hospitality industry.”
Elliott-Howery and Grant also cited the COVID pandemic as one of the things that “took the wind out of their sails” and left the hospitality industry “a bit broken”.
“It seems impossible to do the right thing environmentally, keep customers happy and stay independent and afloat financially,” they said.
“We tried bloody hard and while our passion and purpose hasn’t changed, our bodies, brains and bank balances are a bit exhausted.”
