Base jumper falls to death as parachute fails to open in Thailand

A man has fallen to his death when his parachute failed to open while base jumping from a tower block in Thailand.

The base jumper is said to have jumped from a 29-storey apartment building in the resort town of Pattaya on Saturday evening.

He has been identified by British media as 33-year-old Nathy Odinson.

Odinson went into a deadly tailspin when his parachute failed to open and hit a tree before crashing to the ground, The Mirror reports.

Paramedics were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The parachute that the deceased used to jump malfunctioned and was not centred as expected,” Deputy Inspector of Investigations Police Lieutenant Kamolporn Nadee said.

“He was in a terrible state when we arrived.”

Forensic police are investigating and examining the parachute.

Staff at the building said Odinson’s friends were filming him base jumping from the roof, even though it was not allowed.

“I heard the sound of the tree and I thought it was a fallen branch hitting the ground,” security guard Kanet Chansong said, via The Telegraph.

“A woman screamed, so I walked over and realised it was a person. They were dead.

“I saw that they had jumped from the building.”

Video reportedly shows his preparations for the leap as a friend films him adjusting his equipment in the final seconds before his jump.

Odinson appeared to be an experienced skydiver and base jumper who documented several of his jumps across the world on his social media pages.

The extreme sport involves using a parachute to jump from high landmarks instead of from a plane.

A British Foreign Office spokesperson said it was supporting the family of a British man who died in Thailand.
