Australians warned over mpox virus as new strain spreads overseas

Global health authorities are on alert, as two viruses spread in communities.

Australians have been urged to be aware of symptoms of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, following a recent increase in infection.

The World Health Organisation on Wednesday declared mpox a global public health emergency, as a new strain in Africa continues to spread.

Clade Ib, the version of the virus behind the current outbreak, is believed to cause a more serious type of mpox than the version that caused a public health emergency in 2022.

A case linked to the outbreak in Africa has since been reported in Sweden, the first sign of its spread outside the continent.
