Aussie customer’s fury after being charged hidden fee to have his muffin heated at Melbourne café

We all know the cost-of-living is high and inflation is on the rise, but this story just takes the cake, pardon the pun.

One Australian diner had expressed his shock on social media after he was charged an extra $1 to have his muffin heated at a Melbourne café earlier this week.

The saga all started when he ordered a coffee and a white chocolate and raspberry muffin to go with it.

The man said a waitress then asked him if he wanted the muffin heated, to which he replied ‘Yes’.

After leaving the café, the customer noticed an unusual hidden fee when he took a closer look at his receipt.

“I had asked for the receipt, walked out and found out (later) I had been charged $1 to heat the muffin, which left a bitter taste in my mouth,” he said.

The receipt shows the man had been charged $7 for the muffin, along with an extra $1 for heating.

“A f****** dollar to heat my muffin? It’s c*** like this that just makes you shake your head and question where it is all going,” the furious man said.

7NEWS.com.au has contacted the customer for further comment.

The man said while he understood the rising costs of running a business and the operational expenses that go into the café, he believes customers should get a heads up about the extra charges.

In a follow-up video, the customer said he wanted to shed light on the $1 muffin saga after the owners of the café reached out to him to apologise for the “system error”.

“Don’t get me wrong, the food, atmosphere, service was beautiful, not a problem. I was having a fantastic time all until that very moment when I got the receipt — it was a shock,” he explained.

“Are you kidding me?”

The man — who was visiting Melbourne from Adelaide — said he was already sitting at a table enjoying a cup of coffee when he noticed other customers around him enjoying the “delicious” looking muffin.

“I didn’t order off a menu, I didn’t see the price and I decided to have another coffee with it… And so I wanted it heated because Melbourne is a little bit chilly,” he explained.

The man said he decided to delete the post with the receipt in question — at the request of the café’s owner — after “things started to get out of control”.

“The owners have profusely apologised which I absolutely accepted,” the customer said.

“They said it was a system error and they looked into it and fixed it which I can appreciate.”

The customer pointed out he didn’t have any issue with the price of the muffin, but he thought the waiter should have told him about the extra heating fee.

After sharing an update on his muffin saga, many were quick to side with him.

“I totally agree with what you did, pointing out the extra charge to heat your muffin,” said one.

“I agree with you, it’s not the cost, it is not telling you about it to give you the choice,” added another.

“I would have been shocked too,” said a third.
