Mikel Arteta praises Arsenal fans for clinching Porto victory: ‘They brought their brains’
Atletico Madrid needed a penalty shootout to edge past Inter Milan and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League after an exciting last-16 clash ended 2-2 on aggregate.
Jan Oblak saved two penalties and Lautaro Martinez blasted his effort over the bar to send Atletico through 3-2 in the shootout after the match finished 2-1 to the Spanish side after extra time.
Inter opened the scoring in the 33rd minute through Federico Dimarco but Atletico hit back two minutes later with a goal from Antoine Griezmann and Memphis Depay’s goal three minutes from time sent the tie to extra time.
Both teams had chances to win it in extra time but in the end it was Diego Simeone’s side who held their nerve and last season’s beaten finalists exited the competition.
Aletico join an impressive list of teams in the quarter-final draw, including defending champions Manchester City, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
Arsenal and Barcelona also booked their place this, while the final spot was taken by Borussia Dortmund as Jadon Sancho scored in their 2-0 win over PSV Eindhoven.

When is the Champions League quarter-final draw?
This year’s final will be held at Wembley Stadium in June with Manchester City hoping to secure another tournament crown. Pep Guardiola’s side won their first European Cup by beating Inter Milan in Istanbul last year and progressed to the quarter-finals thanks to a 6-2 aggregate win over FC Copenhagen.
The draw will reveal not just the quarter-final fixtures, but the possible semi-final ties as well. It will be the last time Uefa holds a Champions League draw manually, with the procedure changing to a computerised system when the competition switches formats next season.
